A FACIAL ANTHROPOMETRIC STUDY ON THE KOREAN YOUTHS

Abstract

|
Facial anthropometric studies for Korean were performed for the first time by Dr. Shima in 1934. Prior this time, when our ancestors were expressed on the traditional beauty there was a popular trend to describe ideological concepts.
Recently several studies on the facial anthropometry were established, but they were a special aged group or not covered all components of the facial structures. Therefore authors mad´ plans for the studies of the facial configurations according to ages including babyhood, childhood, youth, manhood and senile to evaluate systemically the facial structures for Korean. For the first step of serial studies, w´ carried out the study on the youths. The anthropom´tric study was included 16 items in the facial height, 18 items in depth and 18 items in breadth.
The subject of this study was 323 college students, from 21 to 22 years old, during last 6 months. 213 out of 323 were female students and the others were male. They were measured actual or photographical by Martins method with his instruments.
The results can b´ summarized as follows.
1. The mean values of the facial anthropom´try for the youths are shown as table 1,2 and 3.
2. The differences of the values by sex were not remarkable as w´ thought.
3. The values in height and width were shown characteristic findings in man but distance in women.
4. The 36% of female has the dominant face on the right side and 40% of male has the dominant face on the left side. However, 37% of male or female were shown evenly symmetrical face.
5. As for the Korean face, the actual values were increased as compared with 1930´s but the infrastructural index was unchanged. This is related with the general body growth influenced by improved food condition, but its characteristic has been preserved well with-out change.
